The IP is defined by two digits:

The first digit takes values from 0 to 6. On one hand, it specifies to what degree the enclosure prevents access to hazardous parts, by preventing or limiting the entry of body parts (e.g. finger) or objects held by a person (e.g. screwdriver). On the other hand, it specifies to what extent the enclosure protects the live parts from dust.

The second digit takes values from 0 to 8. It specifies to what degree the enclosure protects the live parts from incoming water and the resulting damage.

The standard EN 60529 specifies how to place the enclosures during the tests, the right atmospheric conditions, the size and dimensions of various objects that can be used and the proper distribution of water or dust to simulate the actual operating conditions.
